Abstract

The episode about Joseph and the wife of Potifar (Genesis 39) experienced a high interest in Jewish interpretation and is included in the Koran in Sura 12 in its own arrangement. The gender roles of Potifar’s wife and Joseph in the Old Testament narrative and in the Koran are compared, revealing parallels, but also significant differences.
