  Des femmes grecques dansent la pyrrhique – une danse en armes constitutive de la masculinité –, des éphèbes athéniens prêtent serment en prenant à témoins tout un cortège de divinités féminines, des femmes, les Sabines, sont aux origines de la concordia romaine, et Platon demande aux femmes de la République d'assurer les fonctions de gardiennes de la cité, de magistrates et de guerrières. C'est autour de ces exemples et de bien d'autres que l'équipe de recherches « Phéacie » a décidé d'ouvrir pour le monde antique le dossier du genre, en poursuivant la réfl exion menée depuis quelques années sur la question des rapports entre les sexes et la défi nition des rôles sexués. Ce livre offre un premier bilan des problemes que pose l'usage de la catégorie de genre en histoire ancienne, bilan qui, à défaut de traiter tous les thèmes possibles, propose une nouvelle approche de la plupart des types de sources disponibles (épigraphiques, papyrologiques, archéologiques, littéraires).  Il suggère aussi que la mise en lumière de la dynamique des identités de genre permet de lire diff éremment l'histoire sociale et politique, du monde antique comme des mondes contemporains.
